Kuvasz
A regal white guardian from Hungary — loyal, fearless and fiercely independent.
The Kuvasz is a large white livestock guardian with a noble bearing. It is devoted to its family and protective of home and flock, but independent, suspicious of strangers and a poor fit for novice owners.

Temperament
Kuvaszok are loyal, courageous and gentle with those they know. They often bond deeply with their family and are patient with children in their own household.
They are independent thinkers bred to guard without direction. They are wary of strangers, protective and can be territorial with other dogs. Extensive socialisation and patient, respectful training are essential.
Living with a Kuvasz
Exercise
About an hour of daily walking and space to patrol. They need a large, securely fenced yard.
Grooming
Brush weekly and more during heavy seasonal sheds. The white coat sheds dirt well once dry.
Training
Independent and sensitive; patient, consistent, reward-based training and lifelong socialisation are required.
Kids & other pets
Gentle and protective with their own family; supervise visitors and unfamiliar children. Can be dominant with dogs.
Time alone
Content guarding a property alone, but will bark at threats and needs secure fencing.
Home fit
Best suited to a house with secure outdoor space; apartment living is hard on this breed and its neighbours.

Health
With good breeding and care, a Kuvasz typically lives 10–12 years. These are the conditions most associated with the breed — not a prediction for any individual dog.

Cost to own
After the first year, expect roughly $2,000–$4,000 a year for food, routine vet care, preventives, insurance and supplies (US estimate).
- Food, medication and anaesthesia are dosed by weight, so every vet visit costs more for a big dog.

History
The Kuvasz arrived in Hungary with Magyar tribes more than a thousand years ago. It guarded livestock and later became a favourite of Hungarian nobility, including King Matthias Corvinus in the 15th century.
The breed was devastated by the World Wars, with only a few dozen dogs surviving in Hungary. The AKC recognised the Kuvasz in 1931.
